Mercalli intensity scale

Mercalli intensity scale
an empirical scale for rating the effects of an earthquake, as opposed to its strength (see magnitude2 above). Mercalli estimates are stated as Roman numerals (I-XII) to avoid confusion with magnitude estimates on the Richter scale. The scale is named for the Italian geologist Giuseppe Mercalli (1850-1914), who devised the first version in 1902; the modified version used in the U.S. and Canada was developed by Charles F. Richter in 1956.
